Wellness Coordinator - Kanawana YMCA camp

Camp YMCA Kanawana is Québec’s oldest residential summer camp, offering innovative programming and traditional YMCA values-based camping. Staff members live on-site for the duration of the summer, from June to August. Salaries include food, lodging and transportation to and from camp.

The Wellness Coordinator is available on call at all times for supporting staff and campers’ mental well-being, and will take on an active role in supporting staff in creating action plans for campers in need. They will assist with planning and executing training sessions for staff members regarding behaviour interventions and mental health support for campers, and participate in interventions throughout the summer with interpersonal relationship and mental health issues with campers and staff. They will research out-of-camp resources to continue the process of creating a stable environment for staff and campers to work on their mental well-being, and assist the health care staff in the infirmary in organizing camper medications and end-of-session tasks. They will also participate in all-camp events and stewardship as part of the senior staff team.

What challenges will you tackle?

  • Follows ACQ policies on camp health and hygiene as found in the ACQ health guide;
  • Ensures that the mental health needs of campers and staff are met;
  • Appropriately documents all treatment provided and follows up as necessary;
  • Provides assist tools to staff to support campers with mental or emotional well-being needs;
  • Relays pertinent information regarding camper and staff health and safety to the management team and the Camp Director;
  • Contacts parents to discuss their child’s mental health when appropriate;
  • Makes decisions in consultation with the management team to send campers home for mental health reasons;
  • Provides appropriate wellness training to campers and staff;
  • Assists in the infirmary on administrative and organizational duties, as well as in triaging campers with mental or emotional well-being needs;
  • Performs any other tasks as assigned.

Who are we looking for? 

  • Has work experience or an educational background in mental health, mental health first aid and/or related field(s)
  • Has valid First Aid/CPR certificate
  • Has no criminal record in connection with employment
  • Has experience working with youth or in a camp setting (an asset)
  • Has strong oral and written English language skills and is able to communicate in French
  • Has a valid driver’s license (4B license considered an asset)
